Bitmélységre refers to the number of bits used to represent the value of a single pixel in a digital image or video. This determines the range of possible colors or shades that can be displayed. A higher bit depth allows for more colors and smoother transitions between them, resulting in a more realistic and detailed image.

For example, an 8-bit image uses 8 bits per pixel, allowing for 2^8, or 256, different colors or shades of gray. A 24-bit image, commonly used for color images, assigns 8 bits to each of the red, green, and blue color channels, resulting in 2^24, or over 16 million, possible colors. This is often referred to as "true color."

Higher bit depths are crucial in professional fields like photography, graphic design, and video editing, where subtle color gradations and precise detail are important. For instance, 10-bit, 12-bit, or even 16-bit color depth captures a significantly wider range of tones and hues, providing more flexibility during post-processing and reducing the risk of banding artifacts, which are visible steps between shades.
