The biological component, such as an enzyme, antibody, or nucleic acid, selectively interacts with a specific analyte. This interaction generates a signal that is then converted by the transducer into a measurable output, like an electrical or optical signal. The magnitude of this output is typically proportional to the concentration of the analyte present.

The core principle of biosensor operation involves a recognition event. For example, an enzyme might catalyze a reaction that produces a detectable product, or an antibody might bind to a target molecule. This binding or reaction alters a physical property that the transducer can detect. Common transducers include electrochemical sensors (measuring changes in current or potential), optical sensors (detecting changes in light absorption, fluorescence, or refractive index), and piezoelectric sensors (measuring changes in mass).

Biosensori find widespread applications across various fields. In healthcare, they are used for diagnostic testing, such as glucose monitoring for diabetics or detecting biomarkers for diseases.
