Biofilterek, also known as biological filters, are devices or systems that use living organisms to remove or neutralize contaminants from air, water, or soil. They are widely employed in various environmental engineering applications, including wastewater treatment, aquaculture, and industrial air pollution control. The fundamental principle behind biofiltration is the metabolic activity of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and algae, which break down or transform pollutants into less harmful substances.

In water treatment, biofilters are used to remove organic matter, ammonia, and other nutrients. The microorganisms colonize a support medium, which can be natural materials like gravel or sand, or synthetic materials. As contaminated water flows through the medium, the microbes consume the pollutants. In air filtration, biofilters are effective at removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrogen sulfide, and other odorous or toxic gases. The contaminated air is passed through a moist bed of organic material where the microorganisms metabolize the pollutants.

The efficiency of a biofilter depends on several factors, including the type and concentration of contaminants, the microbial community present, the surface area of the support medium, temperature, pH, and the availability of nutrients and oxygen. Proper design and maintenance are crucial for optimal performance. Biofiltration offers an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional physical or chemical treatment methods, as it relies on natural biological processes.
