Betasäikeitä, often translated as "beta strands" or "beta sheets," are a fundamental component of protein secondary structure. They are characterized by a specific arrangement of amino acid residues within a polypeptide chain that allows for hydrogen bonding between adjacent strands. Unlike alpha helices, which are helical structures, beta strands are relatively extended and can be arranged in parallel or antiparallel orientations.

In a beta strand, the polypeptide backbone forms a zig-zag pattern. The side chains of the amino acids protrude alternately above and below the plane of this zig-zag. When multiple beta strands align side-by-side, they can form a larger, more stable structure known as a beta sheet. The hydrogen bonds that stabilize beta sheets form between the carbonyl oxygen of one amino acid residue on one strand and the amide hydrogen of an amino acid residue on an adjacent strand.

Beta sheets are found in a wide variety of proteins and contribute significantly to their overall three-dimensional structure and function. They can form the core of globular proteins or serve as structural elements in fibrous proteins. The arrangement of beta strands within a beta sheet can vary, leading to different structural motifs like the beta barrel, which forms a hollow cylinder, or the beta sandwich, where two beta sheets are pressed against each other. The specific sequence of amino acids in a beta strand influences its propensity to form this structure and its contribution to the protein's stability and interactions.
