Baseband transmission is a method of transmitting a signal without modulation. This means the signal is sent directly over the transmission medium in its original frequency range. In baseband transmission, the information-carrying signal occupies a narrow frequency band that is close to zero frequency, hence the name "baseband." This is in contrast to broadband transmission, where the signal is modulated onto a higher frequency carrier wave, allowing multiple signals to share the same medium simultaneously.

Baseband transmission is commonly used in local area networks (LANs), such as Ethernet, where signals are transmitted over short distances. The simplicity of baseband systems is an advantage, as it requires less complex circuitry. However, the bandwidth of the baseband signal can be a limiting factor, restricting the amount of data that can be transmitted and the distance over which it can travel reliably. Signal degradation due to attenuation and distortion becomes more significant over longer distances in baseband systems. Therefore, repeaters or other signal regeneration techniques may be necessary for extended range communication. Digital signals are inherently baseband signals.
