Baroreceptors are sensory nerve endings that respond to changes in pressure. They are primarily located in the walls of blood vessels, particularly in the carotid arteries in the neck and the aorta in the chest. These specialized mechanoreceptors detect the stretch of the vessel wall, which is directly related to blood pressure.

When blood pressure rises, the walls of these arteries stretch, activating the baroreceptors. This activation sends signals to the brainstem, specifically to the cardiovascular centers. In response, the brainstem can initiate mechanisms to lower blood pressure, such as slowing the heart rate and dilating blood vessels. Conversely, when blood pressure falls, the baroreceptors are less stretched, leading to signals that can cause the heart rate to increase and blood vessels to constrict, thereby raising blood pressure.

This baroreceptor reflex is a crucial part of the body's short-term regulation of blood pressure, helping to maintain homeostasis and ensure adequate blood flow to vital organs. It acts as a negative feedback loop, constantly monitoring and adjusting blood pressure to keep it within a narrow, functional range. While important for rapid adjustments, the baroreceptor reflex does not typically account for long-term blood pressure regulation, which involves other hormonal and renal mechanisms.
