How they work: The applicant applies to a bank for a guarantee. The bank assesses credit risk and may require collateral or other arrangements. A fee is charged for the guarantee. If the beneficiary presents documents showing non-fulfillment of the obligation, the bank pays up to the guaranteed amount and then seeks reimbursement from the applicant. Guarantee terms specify the conditions for calling the guarantee and when it expires.

Risks and costs: Costs are typically a percentage of the guaranteed amount per year. The guarantee can affect the applicant’s liquidity and creditworthiness. If a claim is paid, the beneficiary receives funds even if disputes about performance are later resolved in the applicant’s favor.
