Auspician refers to the practice of divination by observing the flight of birds. This ancient art was prominent in Roman culture, where it was believed that the gods communicated their will through the behavior of birds. Auspices were taken by priests known as augurs, who meticulously studied various aspects of bird behavior, including the direction of flight, the type of bird, the sounds it made, and whether it was eating or not. Different behaviors were interpreted as omens, either favorable or unfavorable, for specific undertakings.

The results of an auspicium could significantly influence important decisions, such as whether to engage in battle, hold elections, or embark on a journey. A negative omen could lead to the postponement or cancellation of an event, while a positive one would signal divine approval. The College of Augurs in Rome held considerable political and religious power, as their interpretations could halt the actions of magistrates and generals.
