Aryleeniyhdisteet, also known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are a group of organic compounds composed of fused aromatic rings. They are formed during the incomplete combustion of organic matter, such as fossil fuels, wood, and tobacco. PAHs are widespread in the environment, found in air, water, soil, and food.

The structure of PAHs consists of two or more fused benzene rings. The simplest PAH is naphthalene, which has two fused rings. More complex PAHs, such as benzo[a]pyrene, can have five or more fused rings. The number and arrangement of these rings determine the physical and chemical properties of the PAH.

Many PAHs are known to be carcinogenic, meaning they can cause cancer. Some PAHs are also mutagenic, capable of causing genetic mutations. Exposure to PAHs can occur through inhalation of contaminated air, ingestion of contaminated food or water, and skin contact. Occupational exposure is a concern for workers in industries such as coal tar production, aluminum smelting, and roofing.

Environmental monitoring of PAHs is important due to their health risks. Regulations are in place in many countries to limit PAH emissions from industrial sources and vehicles. Reducing exposure to PAHs can be achieved by avoiding smoking, minimizing exposure to smoke from fires, and choosing foods that are not charred or heavily processed.
