Apoplast the refers to the non-living components of a plant cell wall and extracellular matrix that are outside the plasma membrane. This forces water and dissolved substances to cross the plasma membrane of endodermal cells, allowing the plant to regulate what enters the xylem. This selective uptake is essential for maintaining nutrient balance and preventing the entry of toxic substances.
