Aphanitos refers to a philosophical concept originating in ancient Greek thought, particularly associated with the philosopher Anaxagoras. It describes something that is imperceptible to the senses, beyond the reach of direct observation. The term is derived from the Greek word "aphanes," meaning unseen or hidden.

Anaxagoras proposed that all things are mixed together in a primordial state, and that the fundamental elements, or "seeds," of all substances are present in everything. These seeds are so small and numerous that they are imperceptible to human senses. Therefore, aphanitos things, in this context, are the infinitely divisible and ultimately undetectable components that make up the observable world.

This concept challenged earlier ideas of elemental substances and introduced a notion of inherent multiplicity within even the smallest perceived entity. The aphanitos, while not directly observable, were considered the true underlying reality from which all apparent forms arise through the process of separation and combination. The understanding of aphanitos was crucial to Anaxagoras' cosmology and his theory of cosmic intelligence, or "Nous."
