Metabolic waste, or anyagcserehulladék in Hungarian, refers to the byproducts of metabolism. Metabolism encompasses all the chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life. The primary metabolic wastes produced by the human body include carbon dioxide, urea, uric acid, and water. Carbon dioxide is a gaseous waste product of cellular respiration, where glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce energy. It is transported by the blood to the lungs and exhaled. Urea is a nitrogenous waste product formed in the liver from the breakdown of amino acids. It is transported to the kidneys and excreted in urine. Uric acid is another nitrogenous waste product, primarily derived from the breakdown of purines, which are components of nucleic acids. Like urea, it is eliminated through the kidneys. Water is a byproduct of many metabolic reactions, including cellular respiration, and is also excreted through urine, sweat, and respiration.

Other metabolic wastes can include lactic acid, which is produced during anaerobic respiration, and bilirubin, a pigment resulting from the breakdown of hemoglobin. The efficient removal of these waste products is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and preventing toxicity within the body. Organs like the kidneys, lungs, liver, and skin play vital roles in the excretion of metabolic waste.
