Antibiotikumellenállási, often referred to as antibiotic resistance, is a growing global health threat. It occurs when bacteria evolve and change in ways that prevent the antibiotics designed to kill them from being effective. This means that infections caused by these resistant bacteria can become harder to treat, leading to longer illnesses, increased healthcare costs, and a higher risk of death.

The primary driver of antibiotic resistance is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. When antibiotics are used unnecessarily, such as for viral infections like the common cold or flu, or when patients do not complete their prescribed course of treatment, bacteria are exposed to the drugs without being eliminated. This includes responsible antibiotic use by both healthcare professionals and the public, the development of new antibiotics and alternative treatments, improved surveillance of resistance patterns, and enhanced infection prevention and control measures. Public awareness campaigns are also crucial to educate people about the importance of using antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor and completing the full course.
