Angiotinogeeniä, also known as angiotensinogen, is a globulin protein produced primarily by the liver. It is the precursor to the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), a crucial hormonal cascade that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. Angiotensinogen circulates in the bloodstream and is converted into angiotensin I by the enzyme renin, which is released by the kidneys in response to low blood pressure or low sodium levels.

Angiotensin I is then further processed by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), mainly found in the lungs, into angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows blood vessels, which directly increases blood pressure. Furthermore, angiotensin II stimulates the adrenal glands to release aldosterone, a hormone that promotes sodium and water reabsorption by the kidneys, thereby increasing blood volume and also contributing to higher blood pressure. The RAAS plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis, but its overactivation can lead to or exacerbate conditions like hypertension, heart failure, and kidney disease.
