Aminowany is a term used in chemistry to describe a molecule that has been modified by the introduction of an amino group (–NH2) or a substituted amino group. The resulting compounds are called amines or aminated compounds, and the process is known as amination. Amination can convert carbonyl compounds, alkenes, or other substrates into nitrogen-containing products with varying degrees of substitution and functionality.

Amination methods include reductive amination, where aldehydes or ketones react with ammonia or primary/secondary amines and are then reduced to give primary or secondary amines; hydroamination, in which an amino group is added across a carbon–carbon multiple bond; and electrophilic or transition-metal-catalyzed amination reactions that form C–N bonds directly from various substrates. Common reagents and catalysts enable selective formation of primary, secondary, or tertiary amines, sometimes with considerations of regio- and stereochemistry.

Applications of aminated compounds are broad and include the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes, and polymers. Aminated surfaces and materials—such as aminated silica or polymer supports—are used to improve binding, catalysis, or biocompatibility. Examples include the preparation of benzylamine via reductive amination of benzaldehyde or the hydroamination of alkenes to give substituted amines.

Safety and practicality considerations are important in amination, as ammonia and many amines can be malodorous or hazardous, and controlling selectivity to avoid over-alkylation or undesired byproducts is a common challenge in synthetic planning.
