An aminerühma is a term used in German to describe a group of amines. Amines are organic compounds and functional groups derived from ammonia, where one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. The simplest amine is methylamine, CH3NH2. Amines are classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary depending on the number of carbon atoms attached to the nitrogen atom. Primary amines have one carbon group, secondary amines have two, and tertiary amines have three. Quaternary ammonium salts are formed when the nitrogen atom in a tertiary amine is bonded to four carbon groups, giving it a positive charge.
