Alusvektori, which translates to "base vector" in English, is a fundamental concept in linear algebra. It refers to a set of vectors that can be used to represent any other vector in a given vector space through a linear combination. In simpler terms, imagine building blocks. Base vectors are the essential building blocks from which you can construct any other shape or structure within a particular framework.

For a set of vectors to be considered a base for a vector space, two crucial conditions must be met. Firstly, the set must be linearly independent, meaning no vector in the set can be expressed as a sum or difference of the other vectors. Secondly, the set must span the entire vector space, signifying that any vector within that space can be formed by adding or subtracting multiples of the base vectors.

The number of vectors in a base is constant for a given vector space and is known as the dimension of the space. For instance, in a two-dimensional plane, any two non-collinear vectors can form a base, and the dimension is two. The most common base vectors are the standard basis vectors, often denoted as i, j, and k in three-dimensional space, which correspond to the directions of the x, y, and z axes, respectively.
