Aluekoodit, often translated as area codes, are numerical prefixes used in telecommunications to identify specific geographical regions. In many countries, these codes are essential for routing telephone calls. When a person dials a number, the initial digits of the number are recognized by the telephone network as an area code, indicating the destination region. This allows the network to direct the call to the correct local exchange and ultimately to the intended recipient.

The implementation of area codes varies significantly from country to country. Some systems use a hierarchical structure, where broader regions are assigned codes, and within those, smaller sub-regions might share or have different codes.
