Alfahemolízisnél, also known as alpha hemolysis, is a type of hemolysis observed in bacterial cultures on blood agar. Hemolysis is the lysis, or breaking down, of red blood cells. In alpha hemolysis, the red blood cells surrounding a bacterial colony are partially broken down, resulting in a greenish discoloration of the agar medium. This is due to the production of an enzyme called alpha-hemolysin by the bacteria, which causes incomplete lysis of hemoglobin within the red blood cells. This incomplete breakdown results in the formation of methemoglobin, which gives the characteristic green hue.
