This process requires energy, typically supplied by the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Unlike passive transport mechanisms that rely on diffusion, active transport can move substances from areas of low concentration to areas of high concentration, which is crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis and performing essential biological functions.

There are two main types of active transport. Primary active transport directly uses metabolic energy, such as ATP hydrolysis, to move solutes. Examples include the sodium-potassium pump, which maintains the electrochemical gradient across the plasma membrane, and proton pumps, which are involved in cellular respiration and ATP synthesis. Secondary active transport, also known as co-transport, utilizes the energy stored in an electrochemical gradient established by primary active transport. This gradient drives the movement of a second solute across the membrane. Co-transport can be either symport, where both solutes move in the same direction, or antiport, where they move in opposite directions.
