Aktiivisuuskertoimet, often translated as activity coefficients, are dimensionless quantities used in physical chemistry to describe the deviation of a solution's behavior from ideal behavior. In an ideal solution, the interactions between solute and solvent molecules are the same as the interactions between solute-solute and solvent-solvent molecules. However, in real solutions, these interactions can differ, leading to non-ideal behavior. Aktiivisuuskertoimet quantify this non-ideality.

The activity coefficient of a component in a mixture is defined as the ratio of its activity to its mole fraction. Activity, in turn, is a conceptual replacement for concentration or partial pressure that accounts for non-ideal interactions. For a component i, its activity ai is given by ai = γi * xi, where γi is the activity coefficient and xi is the mole fraction. If the solution behaves ideally, the activity coefficient is 1, meaning activity equals mole fraction.

A value greater than 1 indicates that the component is "more reactive" than expected in an ideal solution, meaning its effective concentration or partial pressure is higher. Conversely, a value less than 1 suggests the component is "less reactive" than ideal. Factors influencing activity coefficients include intermolecular forces, temperature, pressure, and the concentration of other components in the mixture. They are particularly important in understanding chemical equilibria, reaction rates, and phase behavior in non-ideal systems.
