Aivoselkävesi, also known as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is a clear, colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It is produced in the ventricles of the brain and circulates through the subarachnoid space. The primary functions of CSF include cushioning and protecting the central nervous system from physical shock, acting as a shock absorber, and providing buoyancy to the brain, reducing its effective weight.

CSF also plays a crucial role in nutrient supply and waste removal for the brain. It transports essential nutrients like glucose and oxygen to brain cells and removes metabolic waste products. Furthermore, CSF helps maintain a stable chemical environment within the central nervous system, regulating pressure and ionic balance. The continuous flow of CSF also aids in the removal of toxins and pathogens.

The analysis of CSF, obtained through a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), is an important diagnostic tool. Abnormalities in CSF composition, such as the presence of blood, white blood cells, or elevated protein levels, can indicate various neurological conditions. These can include infections like meningitis or encephalitis, inflammatory diseases, hemorrhages, or even certain types of cancer affecting the central nervous system. Monitoring CSF pressure is also vital, as elevated intracranial pressure can have serious consequences.
