Aivokammiot, also known as cerebral ventricles, are a series of interconnected cavities within the brain that are filled with cerebrospinal fluid. These structures are crucial for the production, circulation, and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which plays a vital role in protecting the brain and spinal cord.

The ventricular system consists of four main cavities: the two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle. The lateral ventricles, located in each hemisphere of the cerebrum, are the largest. They connect to the third ventricle, a midline cavity situated between the two thalami, through small openings called the interventricular foramina (foramina of Monro). The third ventricle then leads to the fourth ventricle, which lies between the pons and cerebellum. From the fourth ventricle, CSF flows into the subarachnoid space, the space between the arachnoid mater and pia mater that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, and also into the central canal of the spinal cord.

The choroid plexuses, specialized vascular tissues found within the ventricles, are responsible for producing CSF. This fluid acts as a shock absorber, cushioning the brain against injury. It also helps to remove waste products from the brain and maintain a stable chemical environment. The CSF is continuously replenished, with a significant amount being produced and reabsorbed daily. Any disruption in the normal flow or absorption of CSF can lead to a buildup of pressure within the ventricles, a condition known as hydrocephalus.
