Aerosolipäästöt, or aerosol emissions, refer to the release of tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the atmosphere. These particles can originate from both natural sources, such as volcanic eruptions and dust storms, and anthropogenic activities, including industrial processes, burning of fossil fuels, and agricultural practices. The size of these aerosols ranges from a few nanometers to several micrometers, and their chemical composition varies widely depending on their origin.

Aerosols play a significant role in the Earth's climate system. They can scatter or absorb solar radiation, influencing the Earth's energy balance. Some aerosols, like sulfates, tend to cool the planet by reflecting sunlight back into space, while others, such as black carbon, absorb sunlight, leading to warming. Aerosols also act as cloud condensation nuclei, influencing cloud formation, properties, and precipitation patterns. Changes in aerosol concentrations can therefore have complex and far-reaching effects on global and regional climate.

Beyond climate, aerosol emissions have substantial impacts on air quality and human health. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a major component of aerosol emissions, can penetrate deep into the lungs, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. They can also reduce visibility and damage ecosystems through acid deposition. Monitoring and controlling aerosol emissions are therefore crucial for mitigating climate change and protecting public health. Various international and national regulations aim to reduce anthropogenic aerosol releases from key sources.
