Adjektivböjning, or adjective declension, describes how adjectives change form to agree with the nouns they describe in Swedish. Swedish nouns have two grammatical genders—common (en-words) and neuter (ett-words)—and adjectives must reflect the gender, number, and definiteness of the noun.

In indefinite singular constructions, adjectives appear in their base form for en-words (stor) and in a neuter form for neuter nouns (stort). In indefinite plural, the adjective typically ends in -a: stora, for both en-words and ett-words. When the noun is definite, the adjective is inflected for singular or plural while the noun carries the definite ending; for example, den stora bilen, det stora huset, de stora bilarna, de stora husen.

Degree of comparison is expressed with separate forms: stor becomes större (comparative) and störst (superlative), and vacker becomes vackrare and vackrast. In many contexts the superlative is used with a definite article, as in den största bilen.

Some adjectives are relatively stable in certain constructions or dialects, and a few form irregularly. Nevertheless, correct adjektivböjning is a standard part of Swedish grammar and is necessary for natural-sounding noun–modifier pairs.
