Adjektiefmorfologie refers to the study of the internal structure and formation of adjectives within a language. It examines how adjectives are modified or how they change their form to express grammatical categories such as degree, number, gender, and case.

One of the most common morphological processes affecting adjectives is gradation, or comparison. This involves forming comparative and superlative degrees from a base adjective. For example, in English, "tall" can become "taller" (comparative) and "tallest" (superlative), often through inflectional suffixes or by using separate words like "more" and "most." Some languages may use entirely different words for comparative and superlative forms, while others might not have a system of gradation at all.

Another significant aspect is agreement. In many languages, adjectives must agree in number, gender, and case with the noun they modify. This means the adjective’s form changes to match the grammatical properties of the noun. For instance, in Spanish, an adjective describing a masculine singular noun will have a different form than when describing a feminine plural noun.

Adjective morphology can also involve derivational processes, where new adjectives are formed from other word classes, such as nouns or verbs, using prefixes or suffixes. For example, the English adjective "happy" can be negated by adding the prefix "un-" to form "unhappy." Similarly, "kindness" (noun) can form the adjective "kind" (though this is a simplification, often the root is a verb or adjective). The study of these internal changes and external relationships helps linguists understand the grammatical system of a language.
