Adenohypophysial refers to the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. This glandular portion of the pituitary originates from Rathke's pouch, an ectodermal invagination of the pharynx during embryonic development. The adenohypophysis is responsible for producing and secreting a variety of hormones that regulate numerous bodily functions. These hormones include growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). The secretion of these adenohypophysial hormones is controlled by releasing and inhibiting hormones produced by the hypothalamus, which are transported to the adenohypophysis via the hypophyseal portal system. Dysfunction of the adenohypophysis can lead to various endocrine disorders, such as gigantism or dwarfism due to abnormal GH secretion, or pituitary tumors which can cause over- or underproduction of one or more adenohypophysial hormones. The adenohypophysis plays a crucial role in the endocrine system, influencing growth, metabolism, reproduction, and stress response.
