Acculturáció refers to the process of cultural change that results from the continuous firsthand contact between two or more autonomous cultural groups. This contact can lead to modifications in either or both groups, though the extent of change can vary significantly. Acculturation is not simply assimilation, where one group adopts the traits of another and loses its own identity. Instead, it involves a dynamic interplay where individuals or groups may adopt certain aspects of a new culture while retaining elements of their original culture, or even developing a new, blended culture.

The process can manifest in various ways. Individuals might adopt new languages, dietary habits, social customs, or religious practices. Group-level acculturation can involve changes in political structures, economic systems, or artistic expressions. Factors influencing the rate and nature of acculturation include the relative power of the groups involved, the duration and intensity of contact, the attitudes of each group towards the other, and the degree of cultural difference between them. Acculturation can lead to both positive outcomes, such as increased cultural understanding and innovation, and negative ones, such as social tension, identity conflict, and the loss of cultural heritage.
