Abyssos is the Ancient Greek term ἄβυσσος (ábyssos) meaning bottomless or unfathomable. It is the linguistic source of the English word abyss, via Latin abyssus and Old French abisme. In Greek usage, the word referred to the deep sea or to a primordial, bottomless depth, and in later literary and theological contexts it came to denote the infernal pit or the unknowable reaches beneath the world.

In religious texts, abyssos appears in Greek translations of Jewish and Christian writings to denote the deep or the pit that holds demons or the fallen angels. The best-known biblical usage is the bottomless pit described in Revelation, where Abaddon/Apollyon is said to inhabit the abyss.

In science, the term informs modern vocabulary about deep-sea zones. The adjective abyssal describes environments below roughly 3,000 meters, including the abyssal plain and abyssal trenches. The noun abyss, sometimes called the abyssal chasm, is used in both scientific and literary contexts to evoke vast, dark depths. The word also yields related forms such as abysmal, meaning extremely deep or desolate, and abysm, an archaism for an abyss.
