Abrazive is a term used to describe materials that wear away or shape other surfaces by friction. In manufacturing and finishing, abrazives are used to grind, cut, finish, or polish materials. They can be natural or synthetic and appear as loose grains, coated products such as sheets and belts, or bonded forms like grinding wheels and blocks.

Common abrazives include natural garnet and emery, as well as synthetic varieties such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, cubic boron nitride, and diamond. Diamond and cubic boron nitride are classified as superabrasives due to their extreme hardness and are favored for work on hard materials and high-precision tasks. The choice of abrazive depends on hardness, toughness, friability, and the desired finish.

Grit size indicates removal rate and finish quality; coarser grits remove material quickly, while finer grits produce smoother surfaces. Bonding materials influence wheel life, heat dissipation, and edge retention; abrazives can be part of bonded tools (grinding wheels) or coated tools (sandpaper, belts), as well as loose grains used in tumbling or lapping processes. Friability, or the tendency of grains to fracture to expose sharp edges, also affects performance.

Standards such as FEPA and JIS define grit sequences, particle shape, and performance criteria to ensure consistency across products. Applications span metalworking, woodworking, stone and ceramics, and precision optics. Safety considerations include dust generation (notably crystalline silica), the need for proper ventilation and respiratory protection, eye protection, and hearing protection in noisy grinding operations. Proper machine setup and workpiece clamping are also essential to minimize hazards and achieve consistent results.
