Zuurstoffunctie refers to the role of oxygen within biological systems, primarily its critical involvement in cellular respiration. In aerobic respiration, oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain, a series of protein complexes embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
