Zugfahrzeugs

Zugfahrzeug is a rail vehicle designed to provide traction for a train. The term covers locomotives and self-propelled passenger or freight units that generate the pulling or pushing force for a train formation. Traction can be supplied by electric systems (overhead lines or third rail), by internal combustion engines in diesel locomotives or diesel trains, or by on-board energy sources such as batteries or fuel cells in newer variants.

In a train composition, one or more Zugfahrzeuge deliver motive power to the entire consist. Depending on the system, the traction units may be locomotives placed at the front, or power cars within a multiple-unit train. The other vehicles in the train are typically unpowered carriages or freight wagons.

Typical categories of Zugfahrzeuge include electric locomotives, diesel locomotives, electric multiple units (EMU), and diesel multiple units (DMU). More recent developments add battery-electric and hydrogen-powered traction units. The choice of Zugfahrzeug type depends on service requirements, route electrification, performance, and operating economy.

Regulatory and operational aspects shape the use of Zugfahrzeuge. They are subject to safety standards, interoperability requirements, and maintenance regimes set by railway operators, national authorities, and international bodies. In many contexts, the term Zugfahrzeug is used interchangeably with Triebfahrzeug, though some sources distinguish the propulsion unit (Triebfahrzeug) from the broader train composition.
