Zsírszéklet, also known as steatorrhea, is a medical term referring to the presence of an abnormal amount of fat in the stool. This condition typically results in greasy, foul-smelling, and pale stools that are difficult to flush. The increased fat content can be visually apparent, or it may require laboratory testing for confirmation.

The primary cause of zsírszéklet is malabsorption, meaning the digestive system is not effectively breaking down and absorbing fats from food. This can stem from various underlying issues affecting the pancreas, liver, bile ducts, or the small intestine. Pancreatic insufficiency, where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes, is a common culprit. Conditions like cystic fibrosis or chronic pancreatitis can lead to this. Liver disease or bile duct obstruction can impair the flow of bile, which is essential for fat digestion. Celiac disease and Crohn's disease, inflammatory conditions of the small intestine, can damage the intestinal lining and hinder nutrient absorption.

Other potential causes include certain medications, excessive alcohol consumption, and surgical removal of parts of the digestive tract. Diagnosing the cause of zsírszéklet involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and specific tests, such as stool fat analysis, blood tests to assess pancreatic and liver function, and imaging studies. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause of malabsorption, which may involve enzyme replacement therapy, dietary changes, or managing the primary disease.
