Zsigmond

Zsigmond is a Hungarian masculine given name, the Hungarian form of Sigmund. The name derives from the Germanic elements sigi "victory" and mund "protection," thus roughly meaning "victorious protection." In Hungarian usage, Zsigmond was common from the Middle Ages onward, often borne by nobles and rulers and continuing into modern times.

Notable bearers include Zsigmond, known in Hungarian as Zsigmond (Sigismund) of Hungary, who reigned as King of Hungary and Croatia from 1387 to 1437 and became Holy Roman Emperor in 1433. The figure remains a prominent historical reference for the name in Hungary. In the 20th century, Zsigmond Móricz (1879–1942) was a major Hungarian novelist and a key figure in the development of Hungarian social realism.

In contemporary Hungary, Zsigmond is still used but is less common than in earlier centuries; it appears in historical works, literature, and in some families. Nicknames include Zsiga.
