Zrýchovanie is a Slovak term that translates to acceleration in English. It refers to the rate at which an object's velocity changes over time. Velocity is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction. Therefore, acceleration occurs when either the speed of an object increases or decreases, or when its direction of motion changes, or both.

In physics, acceleration is a fundamental concept used to describe the motion of objects. It is typically denoted by the symbol 'a'. The standard unit of acceleration in the International System of Units (SI) is meters per second squared (m/s²). This unit signifies the change in velocity (in meters per second) that occurs in one second.

Newton's second law of motion provides a direct relationship between acceleration, force, and mass. It states that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting upon it and inversely proportional to its mass. Mathematically, this is expressed as F = ma, where F is the net force, m is the mass, and a is the acceleration.

Understanding acceleration is crucial in various fields, including mechanics, kinematics, and engineering. It helps explain phenomena ranging from the falling of an apple to the orbital motion of planets. For instance, when a car speeds up, it experiences positive acceleration in the direction of motion. When it brakes, it experiences negative acceleration, also known as deceleration, which is acceleration in the opposite direction of motion. Turning a corner at a constant speed still involves acceleration because the direction of velocity is changing.
