Zierikzeeplayed

Zierikzee is a historic city located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland province in the Netherlands. The city of Zierikzee has a long and storied history dating back to the 8th century. Archaeological finds suggest that a settlement existed on the site as early as the early middle ages, while it's believed that the first fortified town of Zierikzee was established around the 11th century.

The strategic location of Zierikzee in the Oosterschelde estuary facilitated its development as an important trading port and center of commerce during the Middle Ages. In 1323, Zierikzee was granted a royal charter by King Louis II of Bavaria, and later in the 14th century it became a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading federation in Northern Europe.

Throughout its history, Zierikzee played an important role in the maritime trade and battle between the Netherlands and its neighbors, including England, France and Flanders during the Middle Ages and early Modern Era. Historianally, the city's strategic significance rendered it a number of times a contested site, including the Battle of Zierikzee in 1310.

Today, the historical city center of Zierikzee is known for its unique fortified town and picturesque harbor, featuring many cultural and historical monuments. The Ossehaven and Nieuwewasser lakes area, new beach as well as scenic countryside make the location popular with sailors, birdwatchers and travelers and a lovely walk destination.
