ZIPkoodijärjestelmä
The ZIP koodijärjestelmä, or ZIP code system, is a postal code system used in Finland. It is managed by Itella Oyj, the Finnish postal service. The system was introduced in 1971 to facilitate mail sorting and delivery. A Finnish ZIP code consists of five digits. The first two digits represent the postal town or municipality, the third digit indicates a larger geographical area within that town or municipality, and the last two digits specify a more localized delivery area, such as a street or a group of houses. This hierarchical structure allows for efficient routing of mail. For example, a code like 00100 might refer to the central postal district of Helsinki, while a more specific code within that range would direct mail to a particular street. The system is crucial for the smooth operation of postal services, e-commerce deliveries, and various other logistical processes in Finland. It ensures that mail and packages reach their intended recipients accurately and promptly. The Finnish postal service regularly updates the ZIP code directory to reflect changes in address structures and population distribution.
