Ympäristömyyttä, meaning environmental indifference or apathy, refers to a lack of concern or active disregard for environmental issues and their consequences. It is characterized by a failure to acknowledge the impact of human activities on the natural world and a reluctance to adopt sustainable practices. This indifference can manifest in various ways, from individual behaviors to societal attitudes and policy decisions.

Individuals exhibiting environmental indifference may not actively engage in environmentally harmful actions, but they also do not take steps to mitigate their impact. This can include a lack of awareness about environmental problems, a belief that individual actions are insignificant, or a prioritization of convenience and personal comfort over ecological well-being. At a broader level, environmental indifference can be seen in consumerism that disregards product origins or disposal methods, and in a general societal acceptance of pollution or resource depletion.

Policy and business decisions can also reflect environmental indifference when economic growth or short-term profits are prioritized over long-term ecological sustainability. This can lead to inadequate environmental regulations, weak enforcement, or a lack of investment in green technologies and practices. The concept of environmental indifference is distinct from outright environmental hostility, which actively seeks to harm the environment. Instead, it represents a passive or active neglect of environmental responsibility.
