The first supersonic flight was achieved by the Bell X-1 aircraft on October 14, 1947. Commercial supersonic passenger travel became a reality with the introduction of the Concorde aircraft in 1976. Concorde could fly at Mach 2, twice the speed of sound, significantly reducing travel times across the Atlantic. However, due to high operating costs, noise pollution concerns, and a major accident in 2000, Concorde was retired in 2003.

Military aircraft have frequently operated at supersonic speeds for decades. The development of supersonic technology has involved overcoming significant aerodynamic challenges, including the sonic boom, a shockwave created when an object travels through the air faster than sound. Research continues into developing quieter and more fuel-efficient supersonic aircraft for potential future commercial use. Companies are exploring concepts for business jets and passenger aircraft that could operate supersonically, aiming to address the environmental and economic hurdles that led to Concorde's retirement.
