Yleisradioyhtiöt

Yleisradioyhtiöt is the Finnish term for public broadcasting companies, most often referring to Yleisradio Oy (Yle), Finland’s national public service broadcaster. Yle provides radio, television and online content intended to serve the entire population with a focus on impartial news, culture, education and entertainment. It operates in Finnish, Swedish and Sámi languages, and maintains a strong regional and national presence.

Yle was established as a state-owned public broadcaster in the early 20th century, with a mandate defined by Finnish law. It is owned by the Finnish state and governed by a board of directors, while editorial independence and public service obligations are anchored in law and government oversight. The public service remit aims to ensure reliable nationwide coverage and diverse programming.

The organization runs television channels such as Yle TV1 and Yle TV2, radio networks including Yle Radio Suomi and Yle X, and digital services like Yle.fi and the streaming platform Yle Areena. It also provides Swedish-language services (Yle Svenska) and content for linguistic minorities, reflecting Finland’s multilingual landscape.

Funding has traditionally come from public funding and a state-supported public service model, with emphasis on maintaining independence from commercial influence. In response to changing media consumption, Yle has expanded digital distribution and on-demand services to reach audiences beyond traditional broadcast.
