Yksivaihejärjestelmät refers to single-phase electrical systems. These systems are the most common type of electrical power distribution found in homes and small businesses. A single-phase system uses two wires: one is a live or hot wire, and the other is a neutral wire. The voltage in the live wire alternates between positive and negative values, creating a continuous flow of alternating current (AC). This alternating voltage is what drives electrical devices.

The voltage in a single-phase system is typically lower than in a three-phase system, making it suitable for powering standard appliances like lights, televisions, refrigerators, and computers. The simplicity of single-phase wiring and the lower voltage make it a cost-effective and safe choice for residential and light commercial applications. Power is delivered as a single sinusoidal waveform.

While sufficient for most everyday needs, single-phase systems have limitations. They cannot efficiently power large industrial motors or heavy machinery that require more consistent and higher power output. For such applications, three-phase systems are preferred due to their ability to provide a more constant power delivery and higher efficiency for demanding loads. The generation of single-phase power typically involves a single generator winding.
