Yaghnob

Yaghnob refers to the Yaghnob Valley and the Yaghnob River in northern Tajikistan, as well as to the ethnic group and language associated with the region. The valley lies in Sughd Province, within the Zarafshan Range, along the Yaghnob River, a left tributary of the Zeravshan. The landscape is mountainous and features terraced fields irrigated by traditional systems.

The Yaghnob people, or Yaghnobi, are an ethnic group descended from ancient Sogdian communities. They speak Yaghnobi, an Eastern Iranian language in the Sogdian branch. The language is endangered, with a small community of speakers, most of whom are bilingual in Tajik.

Historically, the valley preserves elements of ancient Sogdian culture, and archaeological finds in the region contribute to understanding the spread of Iranian-speaking populations in Central Asia. The area’s continuity of settlement and agricultural practices is noted by researchers studying the region’s ethnolinguistic history.
