Watertorice

Watertorice is a term used in science communication and engineering to describe the transformation of liquid water into solid ice. It may refer to either natural freezing in the environment or engineered processes designed to produce ice from water. The word is a compound of 'water' and 'ice' and appears in educational contexts to illustrate phase transitions and heat transfer.

Physical basis: Freezing occurs when water is cooled to its freezing point, typically 0°C at standard atmospheric pressure. Nucleation begins when a small seed or impurity provides a surface for ice crystals to form. As ice grows, latent heat of fusion is released, about 334 kilojoules per kilogram, which can slow further cooling if heat is not removed. The rate and morphology of watertorice are influenced by impurities, pressure, cooling rate, and agitation, which determine crystal size and texture (for example, clear ice vs. cloudy ice).
