WDMjärjestelmät, or Wavelength Division Multiplexing systems, are a technology used in fiber optic communications to transmit multiple data streams simultaneously over a single optical fiber. Each data stream is assigned a unique wavelength of light, and these different wavelengths are combined and sent through the fiber. At the receiving end, a demultiplexer separates the wavelengths, allowing each data stream to be recovered independently.

This technology significantly increases the data-carrying capacity of existing fiber optic infrastructure. Instead of needing multiple fibers for different signals, WDM allows a single fiber to carry many times more data. This is achieved by utilizing different colors, or wavelengths, of light, each acting as a separate channel.

There are two main types of WDM: coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). CWDM uses fewer wavelengths spaced further apart, making it a more cost-effective solution for shorter distances and lower bandwidth requirements. DWDM, on the other hand, uses many more wavelengths that are packed much closer together, enabling much higher aggregate bandwidth and longer transmission distances, but at a higher cost.
