Värisiirtymiä, or color shifts, refers to phenomena where the perceived color of an object changes under different lighting conditions or when viewed from different angles. This is a common optical effect that can be observed in everyday life and has various scientific and artistic applications.

One primary cause of color shifts is the spectral composition of the light source. Different light sources emit different wavelengths of light. For instance, incandescent bulbs tend to emit more red and yellow light, while fluorescent lights can have a bluer or greener cast. When light from these sources illuminates an object, the object reflects certain wavelengths based on its pigment or material properties. If the light source's spectral output changes, the combination of reflected wavelengths can alter the perceived color.

Another significant factor is the angle of observation and illumination, particularly relevant in iridescent materials. Iridescence, seen in soap bubbles, oil slicks, and the wings of some insects, arises from thin-film interference. Light waves reflecting off the top and bottom surfaces of a thin film interfere with each other. Depending on the thickness of the film and the angle of light and viewing, certain wavelengths are constructively interfered (brightened) while others are destructively interfered (diminished), leading to a shimmering, color-changing effect.

Metamaterials and structural coloration also contribute to color shifts. These engineered materials or natural structures have repeating patterns at a scale comparable to the wavelength of light, causing light to interact in ways that produce color without relying on pigments. The angle-dependent nature of light diffraction and interference in these structures results in noticeable color changes.
