Vibrasjonsquanta refers to the quantized packets of vibrational energy that exist in molecules and other oscillating systems. In quantum mechanics, energy is not continuous but exists in discrete amounts, or quanta. For a vibrating system, these discrete energy levels correspond to the possible vibrational states it can occupy. The energy of a vibrational quantum is directly related to the frequency of the vibration, as described by Planck's relation E = hf, where E is the energy, h is Planck's constant, and f is the frequency.

When a molecule vibrates, it does so at specific, allowed frequencies. Each of these frequencies corresponds to a distinct vibrational energy level. This means a molecule cannot vibrate with just any arbitrary amount of energy; it must absorb or emit energy in multiples of these quanta.

Conversely, molecules can emit vibrasjonsquanta as they transition from a higher to a lower vibrational energy level.
