Vernadskyi

Vernadskyi refers to Vladimir Vernadsky, a prominent Russian and Soviet geochemist and mineralogist. He is best known for his concept of the biosphere, which he defined as the totality of life on Earth and the geological processes it influences. Vernadsky’s work predates much of modern environmental science and ecological thinking.

Born in 1863, Vernadsky’s early career was dedicated to mineralogy and crystallography. However, his scientific curiosity led him to explore the interactions between living organisms and the Earth's crust, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. He proposed that life is a geological force, capable of transforming the planet on a massive scale.

His theories also encompassed the noösphere, a concept he developed later in his life, which suggests a new stage in the Earth's evolution where human thought and activity become a significant geological force. This idea anticipated discussions about the Anthropocene.

Vernadsky's influence extends across multiple scientific disciplines, including geochemistry, biogeochemistry, ecology, and the philosophy of science. His emphasis on the interconnectedness of all living things and their environment laid crucial groundwork for understanding global change and the impact of human civilization. He passed away in 1945.
