Vegagerðin

Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, is a government agency under the Ministry of Transport and Local Government in Iceland. It is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the national road network and related transportation infrastructure, as well as responsibilities related to coastal transport facilities. It serves as a central authority for road infrastructure and coastal transport.

The agency manages the national road network, including highways and major regional connections, as well as bridges and tunnels. It oversees traffic safety, signs, signals, and cooperation with enforcement agencies. It conducts winter maintenance, snow clearance, and responses to adverse weather to keep roads passable. It collects and provides road information to the public and to authorities, supporting travel planning and safety.

Vegagerðin coordinates with regional and local governments, national authorities, and stakeholders on road planning and development projects. It sets standards for road design, materials, and maintenance, and administers the road numbering system and signage. It also oversees certain coastal transport facilities as part of its mandate.

The agency operates under the oversight of the Ministry of Transport and Local Government and is led by a director. It has regional offices across Iceland to support local operations. It maintains information systems and public communication channels for travelers, including travel advisories and road condition reports.
