Veendam

Veendam is a town located in the province of Groningen in the northeastern Netherlands. It is the administrative center of the municipality of Midden-Groningen. The town is situated in a region known for its agricultural landscape and peatlands.

Historically, Veendam developed around the peat extraction industry. The cutting and processing of peat, used as fuel and fertilizer, was a significant economic activity in the area for centuries. This led to the formation of a distinct settlement pattern along canals dug for transportation of peat.

The town has a number of amenities, including shops, schools, and cultural facilities. Its location provides access to surrounding natural areas, such as the Borgmanswolde nature reserve, which offers opportunities for recreation. Veendam is connected by road and rail to other parts of the Netherlands, facilitating transport and commuting.

In recent decades, the economy of Veendam has diversified beyond its historical roots, with various industries and services now present. The municipality of Midden-Groningen, of which Veendam is the largest settlement, was formed in 2018 through the merger of several former municipalities.
