Vastuolulisus

Vastuolulisus is a term used to describe the quality or state in which opposing elements coexist within a single entity, statement, or system, producing internal tension or apparent inconsistency. It is employed in philosophy, linguistics, and social sciences to discuss situations where incompatible aspects seem to be carried by the same object, property, or claim.

In philosophy and logic, vastuolulisus is often linked to discussions of contradiction and paradox. A strict logical contradiction involves asserting both a proposition and its negation (P and not-P). In broader usage, vastuolulisus can describe pragmatic or semantic tensions that do not fit neatly into classical true/false evaluation—such as rules or descriptions that simultaneously imply and negate a certain outcome under different conditions. This broader sense is close to ideas like ambivalence, paradox, or cognitive dissonance.

Analyzing vastuolulisus often involves clarifying scope, identifying contextual dependencies, and examining whether the tension is benign, deliberate, or indicative of a deeper inconsistency in the underlying framework.
